Confidentiality policy

Purpose

Resilience First is committed to maintaining the confidentiality, trust, and privacy of all individuals who seek support through our services. This policy outlines our approach to protecting personal information shared during peer support, counseling, and group activities, as well as the procedures for vetting peer supporters to ensure a safe, respectful environment for all.

Confidentiality Commitment

All staff, volunteers, and peer supporters are required to adhere to strict confidentiality standards, including:

  • No sharing of personal or identifying information disclosed during peer groups, one-on-one sessions, or organizational activities.

  • No recording or dissemination of conversations, names, or stories shared within any Resilience First service.

  • Mandatory reporting exceptions apply only in cases where a participant is at immediate risk of harming themselves or others, or where child abuse or elder abuse is disclosed, in accordance with legal requirements.

Vetting and Training of Peer Supporters

To maintain a safe and professional environment, all peer supporters must undergo a structured vetting and training process:

  1. Application & Background Check

    • All potential peer supporters must submit a detailed application.

    • Criminal background checks are required.

  2. Interview & Screening

    • In-depth interviews assess emotional readiness, communication skills, and understanding of confidentiality and boundaries.

    • References from professional or peer sources are required.

  3. Mandatory Training

    • Approved applicants must complete training covering:

      • Trauma-informed peer support practices

      • Mental health first aid

      • Active listening and boundaries

      • Confidentiality and ethics

  4. Ongoing Oversight & Support

    • Peer supporters work regularly licensed clinicians.

    • Periodic re-evaluations ensure continued adherence to policy and personal well-being.

Violation of Confidentiality

Breaches of confidentiality by any staff, volunteer, or peer supporter will result in:

  • Immediate suspension pending investigation

  • Potential removal from all roles within the organization

  • Legal reporting when applicable

Participant Confidentiality Responsibilities

Participants are asked to respect the privacy of others in all support settings. This includes:

  • Not disclosing names or stories outside the group

  • Not recording or sharing group content

  • Reporting any concerns about confidentiality breaches to LAPS leadership
